+ They Employ A Lot of Special Needs IndividualsĪ great place of employment for those individuals. I think Im being kind when I say fifty-percent of the staff are courteous. To cement the point of a dichotomy of rude and courteous, there was a pharmacist or pharmacy technician who was rude initially: "What do you want?" But after I parried her salutation with an actual salutation ("Good Morning! How are you?"), she became a concerned human being again and was able to answer my question and provide a more reasonable alternative of the same product I queried about. But then theres the leading staff member at the photography section, who will insult you by performing basic math-with her fingers, in your face."You do know one set of the passport photos is two? And if you need three photos, youll have to purchase two sets? And if you each need two sets that will be four sets total?" Im not sure if it was because Im black or if she just wanted to show off her basic math skills and manicure-but, seriously, I was waiting for the woman to pull out an abacus. She was willing to help me locate an item, and even recommend products according to her personal use of them.

"Robin," who works in the home goods section, I believe, should serve as a model to follow in terms of customer service. Youll regularly find empty shelves in lieu of the product youre looking for at this Wally World. (Note: I forget what else I couldnt buy at this Wally World that I ended up getting from Target off Horseblock Rd.) One associate even recommended CVS instead: "Im sure they carry boric acid." (Seriously? CVS > Wal-Mart?) (I dont mind drinking the tap water in my location, but girlfriend does, however.) The Walmart off Middle Island does not have, specifically, these sort of items. For instance, back home (Germantown, MD), the Wally World had Boric Acid (keeps not just roaches away, but water-bugs, domestic centipedes, etc.), Black Flag (an insecticide, which I swear by), and gallon-size jugs of generic-brand, purified drinking water. I thought Wally Worlds would have every miscellaneous item you can think of. (Im giving this place three stars instead of one because of Robin and one or two other thoughtful employees at this location who make this place tolerable.) Otherwise, take an "L" and go to this Wal-Mart. I didn’t realize it would be as bad as it was, and I’m glad we’re all here and safe.If you can go to Wal-Mart (Wally World) in Riverhead or Target off Horseblock, go. Sowinski said cots have been set up in the pharmacy area for employees.Īlthough the store officially closed early, the pharmacy manager said, it was too late to venture home safely: “There was no getting out. They were in the bus for four or five hours.”īy 11 p.m., a fire department vehicle arrived to take them home, she said, but the school bus driver and the children had to walk across the parking lot’s deep snow to Middle Country Road to get to the rescuers. Pharmacy manager Theresa Sowinski said she ran around getting dry clothes off the racks for the two.Īt one point, the girl asked her a question, she recounted: “She looked at me and said ‘Is this your house?’ My heart was broken. More than a dozen Walmart employees also were stranded and, not long before midnight, they were helping a girl, 5, and a boy, 10, both passengers in a minischool bus that had been stuck in front of the store for hours. “The snow was coming down too fast and no plows were able to come through, and we were just stranded for hours and hours.”

“There were cars everywhere,” said Miller, who had gotten wet repeatedly clearing snow from her car while she sat in the jam.

It took Miller three hours to get from her job in Commack to Middle Island, and she was just two miles from home when she encountered the snow snarl on Middle Country Road. She was one of more than two dozen people who went into the store to use the facilities, buy dry clothes and snacks and wait out the blizzard, chatting with strangers about how they all got stuck. Jeanne Miller, 50, sat in her car for seven hours - four of them stuck in the jam on Middle Country Road in front of Walmart. “We’re here to mind the store, but we can’t let people freeze out there,” said manager Jerry Greek, who had closed the store at 6 p.m., four hours earlier than normal.Īs the major roadways were shut down, motorists were stranded for hours on secondary roads, including the portion of Middle Country Road right by Walmart. In Middle Island, Walmart remained unofficially open long past midnight as it welcomed people who couldn’t get home.
